Fall Maintenance Checklist
Schedule professional heat pump servicing before winter: clean outdoor coil (remove leaves and debris), check refrigerant charge, test defrost cycle operation, inspect and clean indoor unit filter, check auxiliary/backup heat operation, and verify thermostat settings for heating mode. These steps prevent most winter heat pump emergencies.
Defrost System Verification
Test the defrost cycle before cold weather arrives: run the heat pump in heating mode on a cool, damp day (above 5°C). Observe the outdoor unit for one full defrost cycle — it should activate every 60-90 minutes. Verify the outdoor fan stops, the compressor continues running, and steam rises from the coil. If the defrost does not activate or ice accumulates, call for service.
Snow and Ice Management
Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow after storms — use a soft broom, never a shovel. Maintain at least 24 inches of clearance around the unit. Keep the unit elevated on a snow stand if your area gets heavy snow. Clear icicles from the unit top grille. Do not cover the unit — it needs to operate to move heat. Ensure the condensate drain is not frozen.
