Furnace and Vermiculite Insulation — What Vancouver Homeowners Must Know

Vermiculite insulation (often from the Libby, Montana mine) can contain asbestos fibers. Disturbing it releases fibers that can cause lung disease. If your home was built before 1990 and has pebble-like insulation in the attic, it may contain vermiculite.

Furnace Interaction

A furnace in a home with vermiculite attic insulation can draw contaminated air into the system if return air ducts pass through the attic. Duct leaks in the attic can pull vermiculite dust into your breathing air. Have your attic insulation tested if vermiculite is suspected.

Safe Approach

Do not disturb vermiculite. Have a certified asbestos abatement professional test it. If vermiculite is present, seal all ductwork joints in the attic with mastic and ensure return air ducts are sealed tight. Avoid attic access unless necessary.
