Causes of Tripped Breakers

A furnace circuit breaker trips when it draws more current than the breaker rating. Common causes: a failing blower motor with seized bearings, a shorted capacitor, a damaged wire causing a ground fault, or the breaker itself failing weak. A breaker that trips once may be a fluke — repeated tripping indicates a problem.

Safe Reset Procedure

Turn the furnace thermostat to OFF. Go to the electrical panel and locate the furnace breaker. Toggle it fully to OFF, then fully to ON. Wait 30 seconds, then turn the thermostat back to HEAT. If the breaker holds, the furnace should run. If it trips again immediately, do not reset again — call for service.

When to Call a Professional

Call for service if: the breaker trips immediately when the furnace tries to start, the breaker feels hot to touch, there is a burning smell from the panel or furnace, or the breaker trips repeatedly after resetting. Continuing to reset a tripping breaker can cause electrical fire.
