Furnace Transformer Replacement Cost in Vancouver

What the Transformer Does

The furnace transformer converts 120V household power to 24V low-voltage power used by the thermostat, control board, gas valve, and relays. If the transformer fails, the entire system loses low-voltage power and will not operate.

Signs of Transformer Failure

The thermostat display is blank (no power), the furnace does not respond to thermostat calls, you may hear a buzzing sound from the transformer area, or a blown low-voltage fuse on the control board (indicating a short that may have killed the transformer).

Replacement Cost

Transformer replacement costs $200-400 including part ($30-80) and labour ($150-250). A technician should also check for the short that caused the failure — replacing the transformer without finding the short means the new one will also fail. Common shorts: thermostat wiring, gas valve solenoid, contactor coil.

Safety Reminder

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
