How Spark Ignition Works
Spark ignitors use a high-voltage electrode to create a spark that ignites the gas — similar to a gas stove spark. When the thermostat calls for heat, the spark module sends high voltage to the electrode, creating a spark at the burner. If the burner lights, the flame sensor detects the flame. If not, the module stops sparking after a few seconds.
Signs of Spark Ignitor Failure
You hear sparking (clicking) but the burner does not light, there is no spark at all despite the furnace calling for heat, the spark is weak and does not jump to the burner, the ceramic insulator around the electrode is cracked, or the spark electrode is corroded or covered with carbon buildup.
Replacement Cost
Spark ignitor replacement costs $250-500 including the electrode ($20-50) and service call. The spark module (if also failed) costs $100-300 extra. Spark ignitors are less common on modern furnaces — most use hot surface ignition. If your furnace has spark ignition, parts are still available but may need to be ordered.
