What Furnace Relays Do

Relays are electrically operated switches that control high-current components like the blower motor, inducer motor, and compressor. They allow the low-voltage control board to switch high-voltage circuits. A failed relay can leave a component stuck on or off.

Signs of Relay Failure

The blower runs continuously (relay stuck closed), the fan does not start when it should (relay stuck open), the compressor or inducer does not run, or you hear a clicking sound from the relay but the component does not engage. A buzzing relay indicates pitted or worn contacts.

Replacement Cost

Individual relay replacement costs $200-400 including part ($20-60) and labour. However, relays are often mounted on the control board, requiring control board replacement ($400-1,300) if the relay cannot be replaced separately. A technician can determine if the relay is serviceable.
