What the Pressure Switch Does
The pressure switch is a safety device that verifies the inducer motor is creating proper draft before allowing the gas valve to open. It has a small rubber hose connected to the inducer housing. If the switch does not close within a few seconds of the inducer starting, the furnace will not fire.
Signs of a Bad Pressure Switch
The inducer motor runs but the furnace does not ignite. You hear a clicking sound but no burner flame. The furnace displays an error code related to the pressure switch. In some cases, the furnace may fire briefly then shut off. A stuck-open or stuck-closed switch prevents operation.
Replacement Cost and Process
Pressure switch replacement costs $250-450 including part ($40-100) and labour ($150-300). The technician tests the switch with a manometer to verify it opens and closes at the correct pressure. If the new switch also fails, the inducer motor or venting may be the root cause requiring further diagnosis.
