OEM Parts

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts are made by or for the furnace brand. Benefits: exact fit, guaranteed performance, maintains manufacturer warranty, and proper safety certification. Cons: more expensive, may take longer to source. OEM is always recommended for safety-related components (gas valves, pressure switches, limit switches).

Aftermarket Parts

Aftermarket (universal) parts are made by third-party companies. Benefits: lower cost, often in stock locally. Cons: may not fit perfectly, can void manufacturer warranty, may not meet original performance specifications. Universal parts are acceptable for: capacitors, contactors, thermostats, and some fan motors.

Recommendations by Part Type

Use OEM for: gas valves (safety critical), heat exchangers, control boards, pressure switches, ignitors, and flame sensors. Aftermarket acceptable for: capacitors, contactors, transformers, fan motors (if specifications match), and thermostats. When in doubt, choose OEM — the small price premium is worth the reliability.
