Symptoms

A failing capacitor causes: the blower motor humming but not starting, slow startup, intermittent operation, or the motor running hot. The furnace may short cycle as the limit switch trips from reduced airflow.

DIY Replacement

Turn off power at the breaker. Remove the blower compartment panel. The capacitor is a cylindrical metal or plastic component near the blower motor — it looks like a large battery. Discharge it by placing a screwdriver across the terminals. Note the wire connections (take a photo), disconnect, and replace with an identical rated capacitor.

Capacitors cost $15-40 at hardware stores. Professional replacement including service call costs $200-350. DIY is straightforward for homeowners comfortable with electrical work. Always match the microfarad (uF) and voltage ratings exactly.
