Signs of Worn Bearings
Worn blower motor bearings produce a distinctive screeching, squealing, or grinding sound when the blower runs. The noise may be loudest at startup or shutdown. As bearings wear further, the motor may seize completely, stopping all airflow.
Replacement Options
On some motors, the bearings can be replaced individually ($150-300). On sealed motors (most modern ECM motors), the entire motor must be replaced ($500-1,200). A technician will determine if bearing-only replacement is possible for your specific motor.
When to Replace the Motor vs Furnace
If the furnace is under 10 years old, motor replacement is the right choice. If over 15 years old and motor replacement costs over $800, consider furnace replacement — a new furnace includes a new motor and improved efficiency.
