Gas Valve Lever Positions
The lever on the gas line near your furnace has two positions: parallel to the pipe = ON (gas flowing), perpendicular to the pipe = OFF (gas shut off). The valve should be in the ON position during normal operation. Only turn it OFF during emergencies or when the gas fitter instructs you.
When to Turn the Gas Off
Turn the gas valve OFF if: you smell gas and are waiting for emergency services, the furnace is being replaced or repaired, the home will be vacant for extended periods, or there is a natural disaster (earthquake, flood). After turning the gas off, you may need a gas fitter to relight the pilot or reset the system.
Safety Precautions
Never force a stuck valve — call a gas fitter. If the valve is difficult to turn, it may be corroded and could break. After turning the gas back on, check for leaks using soapy water (bubbles indicate a leak). If you are not comfortable working with gas, call a professional. Only licensed gas fitters should replace gas valves.
