How the Regulator Works
The gas valve regulator maintains a consistent gas pressure to the burner — typically 3.5 inches of water column for natural gas. It adjusts the gas flow based on the incoming supply pressure. If supply pressure fluctuates, the regulator compensates to deliver steady pressure to the burner for consistent combustion.
Signs of Regulator Failure
The burner flame is yellow or lazy instead of sharp and blue (too much or too little gas), the burner makes a roaring sound (gas pressure too high), the furnace produces soot (incomplete combustion from incorrect pressure), or gas bills increase without explanation (overfiring from too-high pressure).
Professional Adjustment Required
Gas pressure adjustment requires a manometer and combustion analyzer. Only licensed gas fitters should adjust the regulator. Incorrect pressure can cause: incomplete combustion (CO risk), heat exchanger damage from overheating, and wasted gas from overfiring. Pressure is checked and adjusted during annual furnace maintenance.
