Should I Clear Snow from My Gas Meter and Furnace Vent?

What to Clear

After heavy snow, check: the two PVC vent pipes for high-efficiency furnaces (intake and exhaust must be clear), the gas meter and regulator (keep clear for access and vent operation), and the outdoor fresh air intake for combustion air. Use a broom — never a shovel — near pipes.

How to Clear Safely

Gently brush snow away from vents and the meter. Do not poke objects into vent pipes — this can damage internal components. Do not pile snow on or around the meter. Do not use salt or chemicals on or near the meter.

Signs of Blockage

Signs your vents may be blocked: furnace shutting off frequently, error codes related to pressure switch or venting, gas appliances not working properly, or frost accumulating on vent terminations. If you suspect a blockage, turn off the furnace and call for service.
