Can Gas Lines Freeze?

Natural gas lines themselves do not freeze — natural gas freezes at -182°C. However, the gas meter regulator vent can become blocked by ice and snow, causing the regulator to malfunction and interrupt gas supply. This is the most common cause of gas service issues during Vancouver winter storms.

Prevention Tips

Keep the gas meter and regulator clear of snow after every storm. Use a broom — never a shovel. Do not pile snow on or around the meter. Ensure the regulator vent (small opening on the bottom of the regulator) is not blocked. If you have concerns, call FortisBC to inspect.

What to Do If Gas Supply Is Interrupted

If your furnace stops working during a storm and other gas appliances also fail, the issue may be at the meter. Check if the meter is obstructed. If unclear, call FortisBC emergency line. Do not attempt to disassemble or adjust the meter or regulator yourself.
