Your gas bill depends on: furnace efficiency (AFUE), home heat loss (insulation, windows, square footage), thermostat setting, and weather severity measured in heating degree days. Vancouver averages 2,800-3,200 heating degree days annually.

Quick Estimate Formula

Estimated monthly cost = (home sq ft × 0.5) × (furnace AFUE adjustment) × (gas rate factor). For a 2,000 sq ft home with 96% AFUE furnace: approximately $100-180/month in winter. For an 80% AFUE furnace: approximately $130-230/month. The 16% efficiency difference costs $200-300 extra per winter.

Use FortisBC online account tools to track your daily gas usage. Compare year-over-year for the same billing periods, adjusting for weather. A 15%+ increase not explained by colder weather may indicate furnace efficiency decline or a system problem.
