What the Draft Inducer Does
The draft inducer fan pulls combustion gases through the heat exchanger and pushes them out the vent. It is the first component that starts when the thermostat calls for heat. Without it, the furnace cannot operate safely.
Signs of Inducer Failure
The inducer makes a rattling, grinding, or screeching noise at startup. The furnace does not start (the pressure switch never closes because the inducer is not creating enough draft). The inducer runs intermittently or stops mid-cycle. Error codes point to pressure switch or inducer issues.
Replacement Cost
Inducer motor replacement costs $500-1,200 including the motor assembly ($250-600) and labour ($200-400). Premium brands (Carrier, Lennox, Trane) have more expensive inducer assemblies. Emergency replacement available same-day during winter.
