Monthly Tasks (Heating Season)
Check and replace the air filter — hold the filter up to light; if you cannot see through it, replace it. Check that all supply registers and return grilles are open and unobstructed. Listen for unusual sounds during startup. Check the thermostat batteries if applicable.
Seasonal Tasks
Fall (before heating season): test the furnace by raising the thermostat, replace the filter, check carbon monoxide detectors, clear the area around the furnace. Spring (after heating season): replace the filter, clean the blower compartment, check the condensate drain, close combustion air intake if adjustable.
Annual Professional Service
Despite DIY maintenance, an annual professional inspection is essential. A technician performs: combustion analysis, heat exchanger inspection, gas pressure measurement, burner cleaning, safety control testing, and blower motor check. Schedule in fall before the heating season rush.
