PSC Motors

Found in: budget and mid-range furnaces. Pros: simple, inexpensive, easy to replace. Cons: uses more electricity, no speed variation.
ECM Motors
Electronically Commutated Motors (ECM) are variable-speed motors. Cost: $400-700 for replacement. Efficiency: 80-85% efficient. Noise: quiet (ramps up and down smoothly). Found in: mid-range and premium furnaces. Pros: 50-70% less electricity, quieter, better comfort. Cons: more expensive, complex to diagnose.
Which Motor Should You Choose?
