What Are Furnace Balancing Dampers and How Do I Adjust Them?

Locating Dampers
Balancing dampers are typically located on the main duct runs near the furnace. They look like a metal handle or wing nut on a round pipe or a lever on a rectangular duct. Some dampers are behind removable ceiling panels in basements.
Seasonal Adjustment
In winter, set dampers to direct more airflow to rooms needing heat (north-facing, ground floor). In summer (with AC), direct more airflow to upper floors and sunny rooms. Mark damper positions with tape so you can return to known-good settings.
DIY Adjustment Process
Start with all dampers fully open. Identify the coldest rooms and partially close dampers to the warmest rooms (by quarter turns). Wait 24 hours between adjustments. The goal is even temperature across all rooms. Over-adjusting can strain the furnace blower.
